In most cases the MAGIX Burning Routines support a wide range of devices that comply with the MPC2 / ATAPI / SCSI3 standard. This applies also to several devices not listed here. Contact your hardware supplier for details. Any devices not complying to these standards completely have to implement emulated software layers to be usable. See comment section. It is recommended to check and install current firmware versions for the device before performing this update. Contact your hardware supplier in any case of uncertainty. Please note that particularly new devices have to undergo a certain period until a working firmware has been established by the manufacturer. That period can last up to one year. ######################################################################### DEVICES / GERÄTE / GRAVEURS ######################################################################### ================================= A. Supported CD recording devices ================================= At the time PoINT CD/DVD Audio/Video SDK (AVSDK) Version 9.0 has been tested with the following recording devices (DAO = disc-at-once). Please read also the comments below. IMPORTANT: Keep the firmware of your recording devices up to date. Firmware updates are provided free of charge by almost any vendor at the corresponding internet sites. The updates often solve compatibility issues and make the recording process more reliable. NOTE: Drives supporting CD-R(W) in addition to DVD+R(W), DVD-R(W) or DVD-RAM media are listed in both, sections A and B. IMPORTANT: This list does not always show the full name of the supported recorders, but only the significant part of the name. Especially extensions like 'S' (SCSI), 'E' (EIDE or EXTERNAL), 'A' (ATAPI), 'T' (TRAY), 'I' (INTERNAL) are often ommitted. IMPORTANT: Some CD recorders do not support the disc-at-once recording mode for data or video CDs (in contrast to pure audio CDs). If AVSDK reports recording problems like "required feature/command not supported" when you try to record a data or video CD, please disable disc-at-once recording. - Acer CRW620 - Acer CRW620A - AOPEN CRW2440 - AOPEN CD-RW CRW4048 - AOPEN CD-RW CRW5232 - CyberDrv CW078D CD-R/RW - CyberDrv CW088D CD-R/RW - Generic CRD-BP4 (see Sanyo CRD-BP4) - Generic CRD-R800S (see Sanyo CRD-R800S) - Grundig CDR100IPW - HighTech CD-R1002 - HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N - HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N - HP 4020I - HP C4324/C4325 - HP CD-Writer 6020 - HP 6020I - HP CD-Writer+ 7100i/e - HP CD-Writer+ 72xxi/e - HP CD-Writer+ 8xxxi - HP CD-Writer+ 9xxx - IDE-CD R/RW - IDE-CD ReWritable - IMS CDD2000 - IMS CDD2600 - IOMEGA ZIPCD - IOMEGA ZIP CD - JVC XR-W1001 (not DAO) - JVC XR-W2001 (firmware rev. 2.xx for DAO) - JVC XR-W2010 - JVC XR-W2020 - JVC XR-W2022 - JVC R2626 - JVC XR-W2040 - Kodak CDR-240 - Kodak PCD200 (not DAO) - Kodak PCD225 (firmware rev. 1.07 or higher for DAO) - Kodak PCD240 (see below) - Lite-On LTR-511 - Matsushita CW-7501 - Matsushita CW-7502 - Mitsbish CDRW226 - Mitsbish CDRW226A - Mitsbish CDVR-2X4 - Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS - _NEC CB-2100 - _NEC CD-RW NR-9100A - _NEC CDRW/DVD CB1100A - _NEC NR-7500A - _NEC NR-7700A - _NEC NR-7800A - _NEC NR-7800B - _NEC NR-7900A - _NEC NR-8500A - _NEC NR-9200A - _NEC NR-9300A - _NEC NR-9400A - Nomai 680RW - Olympus CDS615 - Olympus CDS620 - Optima CD-R650 - Philips CDD521 (not DAO) - Philips CDD522 (firmware rev. 1.07 or higher for DAO) - Philips CDD2000 - Philips CDD2600 - Philips CDD3600 - Philips CDD3610 - Philips CDD3801 - Philips CDD4201 - Philips OMNIWRITER26 - Philips PCA382RW - Philips PCRW2010 - Pinnacle RCD-1000 (firmware rev. 2.xx for DAO) - Pinnacle RCD5040 - Pinnacle RCD4X4 - Pinnacle RCDW226 - Plasmon RF4000 (not DAO) - Plasmon RF4100 (not DAO) - Plasmon RF4102 (not DAO) - Plasmon CDR4220 - Plasmon CDR4240 (see below !) - Plasmon CDR4400 - Plasmon CDR480 (firmware rev. 3.00 or higher) - Plextor CD-R PX-R412 (firmware rev. 1.03 or higher for DAO) - Plextor CD-R PX-R820 - Plextor CD-R PX-W4220 - Plextor CD-R PX-W8220 - Plextor CD-R PX-W8432 - Plextor CD-R PX-W124 - Plextor CD-R PX-W1210 - Plextor CD-R PX-W1610 - Plextor CD-R PX-W2410 - Plextor CD-R PX-W4012 - Plextor CD-R PX-W4824 - Plextor CD-R PX-W5224 - Plextor CD-R PX-230 - Plextor CD-R PX-320 - Ricoh CD-R/RW MPxxxx - Ricoh DVD/CDRW MPxxxx - Ricoh MP6200A - Ricoh MP6200S - Ricoh MP6201S - Ricoh MP6201S - Ricoh RO-1420 (see below !) - SAF CD-R2004 - SAF CD-R2006 (not DAO) - SAF CD-R4006 (see below !) - SAF CD-R8020 - Sanyo CRD-BP4 - Sanyo CRD-R800S - Sanyo CRD-RW1 - Sanyo CRD-RW2 - SCSI-CD ReWritable - Sony CDU920 - Sony CDU924 - Sony CDU926 (not DAO) - Sony CDU928 (not DAO, see below !) - Sony CDU948 - Sony CD-RW CRX10U - Sony CD-RW CRX120 - Sony CD-RW CRX130 - Sony CD-RW CRX140 - Sony CD-RW CRX145 - Sony CD-RW CRX0811 - Teac CD-R50S - Teac CD-R55S (firmware rev. 1.0f or higher for DAO) - Teac CD-R56S (includes all variants like 400 and 600) - Teac CD-R58S - Teac CD-W216E - Teac CD-W512S - Traxdata CDR4120 - Traxdata CDR6120 - Traxdata CDRW2224 PLUS - Traxdata CDRW2260 - Traxdata CDRW2260+ - Traxdata CDRW4260 - Traxdata CDRW4424 PLUS (not DAO) - Traxdata CRW2260 PRO - Waitec WT2036EI (not DAO) - Waitec WT2422 - Waitec WT2444 (not DAO) - Waitec WT4046 - Waitec WT412 - WPI CDR-432 - WPI CDR-632P - Yamaha CDR100 (firmware rev. 1.04 or higher for DAO) - Yamaha CDR102 - Yamaha CDR200 - Yamaha CDR400 (see below !) - Yamaha CRW2100 - Yamaha CRW2200 - Yamaha CRW2216 - Yamaha CRW2260 - Yamaha CRW3200 - Yamaha CRW4260 - Yamaha CRW4261 - Yamaha CRW4416 - Yamaha CRW6416 - Yamaha CRW8424 - Yamaha CRW8824 - Yamaha CRW-F1E ------------------------------- Specific comments/restrictions: ------------------------------- - Grundig CDR100IPW, HP 4020I, HP C4324/C4325, IMS CDD2000, Kodak CDR-240, Mitsumi CD-R CR-2401TS, Mitsbish CDVR-2X4, Philips CDD2000, Plasmon CDR4220, WPI CDR-432 Firmware revision 1.20 does not support sub-indexes and reverses the audio channels; use revison 1.25 or above; this revision can be obtained from Philips (philips.com in the world wide web) - JVC XR-W1001, JVC XR-W2001, Pinnacle RCD-1000 Those JVC drives which do not support DAO write all tracks at once; therefore no link blocks (no errors or noise) is added between audio tracks; only between lead-in area and first track and between last track and lead-out area link blocks are inserted; link blocks at these positions normally do not cause errors and the resulting discs are perfect Catalog numbers (UPC/EAN) and ISRC are not supported by these drives - JVC XR-W2010, Pinnacle RCD5040 Catalog numbers (UPC/EAN) and ISRC are not supported by these drives. - Kodak PCD225, Philips CDD522 Firmware revisions 1.04 to 1.06 theoretically support DAO recording, too, but in practise it does not work reliably; therefore drives with these firmware revisions should not be used at all - HP 7100i/e 7100i is an ATAPI drive. 7100e is connected to the printer port of a PC. This drive drive did not work reliably at 2x speed during our tests. Please check carefully the performance of your system by simulating the recording of several disks at 2x speed. In case that problems occur, record at 1x speed. The drives do not allow to modify the length of pauses at the beginning of tracks in track-at-once mode. The default length is 2 seconds. - HP 72xxi/e 72xxi is an ATAPI drive. 72xxe is connected to the printer port of a PC. If you use this drive, please check carefully the performance of your system by simulating the recording of several disks at 2x speed. In case that problems occur, record at 1x speed. The drives do neither support DAO, nor do they allow to modify the length of pauses at the beginning of tracks. The default length is 2 seconds. - HP 8xxxi The HP 8xxxi drives are ATAPI drives. The drives do neither support DAO, nor do they allow to modify the length of pauses at the beginning of tracks. The default length is 2 seconds. - HP 9xxx The drives do neither support DAO, nor do they allow to modify the length of pauses at the beginning of tracks. The default length is 2 seconds. - _NEC NR-7500A This drive does not support sub-indexes and cannot record more than about 90 tracks in disc-at-once mode. - HP CD-Writer+ 7100i/e, HP CD-Writer+ 72xxi/e, HP CD-Writer+ 8xxxi, HP CD-Writer+ 9xxx, Philips CDD3600, Philips CDD3610, Philips CDD3801, Philips PCA382RW, Philips CDD4201, IDE-CD R/RW, IDE-CD ReWritable, IOMEGA ZIPCD, IOMEGA ZIP CD, SCSI-CD ReWritable, Traxdata CDRW2260+, Traxdata CRW2260 PRO, Traxdata CDRW2224 PLUS, Traxdata CDRW4424 PLUS, Waitec WT2036EI, Waitex WT2422, Waitex WT2444, WPI CDR-632P The drives do not allow to modify the length of pauses at the beginning of tracks in track-at-once mode. The default length is 2 seconds. - Matsushita CW-7501, Plasmon CDR4240 These drives do not correctly disconnect from the SCSI bus during recording. - Ricoh RO-1420 This drive does not correctly disconnect from the SCSI bus during recording. Furthermore RO-1420 does not support copy protection bits (see on-line help). Copy protection will always be on. - Sanyo CRD-BP4 The drive does not support sub-indexes on audio CDs. - Sony CDU920, Sony CDU924, HighTech CD-R1002, Olympus CDS615, Olympus CDS620, Optima CD-R650, SAF CD-R2004, Sony CDU948 Catalog numbers (UPC/EAN) and ISRC are not supported by these drives - Sony CDU928 This drive does not support DAO, but it allows to vary the lengths of pauses. However, even if the length is set to 0, 2 run-out blocks are always added between subsequent tracks. Additionally, the current versions of the drive do not work under Windows NT. - SAF CD-R4006, Yamaha CDR400 The comments below are valid for firmware revision 1.0a only. In firmware revision 1.0b or above, all of these problems are solved. With firmware 1.0a, these drives do not disconnect from the SCSI bus during writing. Thus, the SCSI bus is permanently claimed by the drives, communication with other connected drives cannot take place. In other words, these drives must be connected to a separate SCSI adapter. DO NOT connect any other drive to the same bus. Otherwise writing will not be reliable because Windows forces hard resets on the SCSI bus if the other drives do not respond. The software prints "Drive not ready" in this case. With firmware 1.0a, ISRC codes and catalog numbers (UPC/EAN) are not correctly recorded by the drives. - Yamaha CDR100, Plasmon CDR4400 Firmware revision 1.08 adds noise to the end of the last audio track; either set the copy protection bit for all tracks or try to get a new firmware revision to avoid the click noise ================================== B. Software Installation ======================== --------------------------------------- Remark for installation on Windows 3.1x --------------------------------------- PoINT CD/DVD Audio/Video SDK does not work in Windows 3.1x and it cannot be installed on this platform. ------------------------------------------- Remark for installation on Windows 95/98/Me ------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT !! Disable the Auto. Insert Notification (see control panel -> system -> device manager -> CD-ROM -> -> properties -> setting) for the recorder. RESTRICTION OF WINDOWS 95 !! In older versions of Windows 95 (up to 4.00.950a) PoINT CD/DVD Audio/Video SDK can support only one connected ATAPI drive. In case you are using one of these versions and if you want to connect a CD-ROM drive and an additional CD recorder (e.g. Sony CDU928E), please connect both drives to the same ATA channel. Configure the CD-ROM drive as ATA master and the recorder as ATA slave. PoINT CD/DVD Audio/Video SDK will then find and support the recorder. ASPI LAYER !! ATAPI drives are fully supported in Windows 95/98/Me. Unfortunatelly some software products install an incompatible ASPI manager which makes it impossible to access ATAPI drives. In case that PoINT CD/DVD Audio/Video SDK does not find ATAPI drives although available, please solve the problem by either installing an ASPI update e.g. from Adaptec (www.adaptec.com) or, in extreme cases, install Windows 95/98/Me again over the existing installation to replace incompatible by original modules. Hardware Installation and Troubleshooting ============================================ This sub-section offers some hints for the configuration of adapters, recorders and hard disk drives. PLEASE READ IT VERY CAREFULLY since most communication and performance problems are caused by wrong configurations. For a reliable data transfer from hard disks to recorder, it is necessary to read from the hard disk and to write to the recorder in parallel, not in turn. Parallel operation is guaranteed if hard disk and recorder(s) are connected to different and independent FireWire, SCSI, USB and/or ATA channels. Generally, parallel data transfers are supported best by bus master SCSI host adapters like Adaptec AHA-1540/2940 and more recent models as well adapters from Symbios Logic. Parallel data transfers are also possible in case that hard disk and recorder are connected to different ATA channels, especially if DMA mode is enabled. Note that a special bus master ATA driver must be installed on Windows 95, NT 3.5 and NT 4.0 platforms for your system in order to enable the DMA mode. If your recorder provides enough cache memory (200kB * speed), you may also use a less expensive PIO SCSI adapter like Adaptec 1505, 1510, 1520 and most other adapters for ISA bus. If you use a PIO adapter then the disconnect/reconnect function of the adapter MUST be enabled. Please refer to the user manual of your SCSI adapter for more information. --------------------- Performance problems: --------------------- Performance problems cause buffer under-run, write errors or, if the recorder provides a buffer under-run protection, low recording speed. The following hints may help to improve the performance: ** * ATA hard disk ** On Windows 95/NT3.5/NT4.0 platforms, install the special bus master ATA driver for the chip set of your PC in order to enable the DMA mode for the hard disk. Contact your dealer or the manufacturer of the PC for more information. On Windows 98/Me platforms, enable the DMA mode for the hard disk in the device manager. ** * ATAPI recorder ** Enable the DMA mode for the recorder as described above. Do not connect the recorder to the same channel than the hard disk. Otherwise the quality of your recordings may suffer from a reduced data rate. ** * SCSI hard disk or recorder ** Enable sync. data transfers and the disconnect/reconnect function for the drive(s) in the BIOS setup program of the SCSI adapter, provided a BIOS exists. Refer to the user manual of the SCSI adapter for more information. On Windows 95/98/Me platforms, enable these features in the device manager, too. ----------------------- Communication problems: ----------------------- Communication problems on hardware level cause hard resets, timeouts, aborted commands, selection failures, drive-not-ready conditions, and many more errors. Less critical communication problems may also result into degraded performance. This soft- ware generates an error message in these cases. Communication problems on software level are caused by bugs in device drivers or, especially on Windows 95/98/Me platforms, by applications accessing the recorder in parallel to this software. These problems may cause the same failures than problems on hardware level, and they may result in software crashes. Windows tries to recover from communication problems by retrying the failed operation, and by disabling the sync. transfer mode for SCSI adapters. Usually, there is no notification about the failure. Because of this strategy, it is often possible to read from recorders, although errors occur. However, for recording on sequential media (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, ...), this strategy does not work since commands used for recording cannot be repeated. ** * FireWire and USB problems ** Check the cabling of the bus concerned. Disconnect other devices connected to the same FireWire or USB adapter. If this solves the problem, check the configuration of the bus, especially the total lenght of cables and the sum of the electrical currents consumed. Refer to the user manual of the adapter for more information. ** * (S)ATA problems ** Check the cabling of the ATA channel concerned. Provided a second device is connected to the same ATA channel, disconnect the second device. If this solves the problem, check the configuration of the second device. For more information, refer to the user manual of your PC. If you connect your recorder to an ATA channel supporting RAID configurations, you should disable this support in order to avoid timeout errors and hard resets. ** * SCSI problems ** Disable the sync. data transfer for all devices connected to the SCSI bus concerned. This is done in the BIOS setup program of the SCSI adapter, provided a BIOS exists. Refer to the user manual of the SCSI adapter for more information. On Windows 95/98/Me platforms, disable the feature in the device manager, too. If this solves the problem, the cabling of the bus is wrong (e.g. too long) or bad, or the bus is not correctly terminated. The mistake most commonly made is to use passive terminators and inappropriate cables for SCSI-II or SCSI-III busses. ** * Other problems ** On Windows 95/98/Me platforms, disable the Auto. Insert Notification feature in the device manager for the recorder and, if present, for any additional CD-ROM drive which is connected to the same ATA channel or SCSI bus. Check for applications accessing the recorder in parallel to this soft- ware. Terminate or, if not possible, de-install such applications. This especially includes other recording software and virus scanners.
