Mi no entender...
Tapehiss dice:
" i really would like one day to (in my own studio) compare some neve pres first hand:
chandler ltd-1
avedis ma5
vintech
aurora
bae
etc......
and see what i like the best, regardless of the most accurate representation of a vintage neve.
Geoff dice:
"Hi
Please don't include my products in a Neve clone list
Thank you"
Tapehiss dice:
"if this hurts your ego(or the brand you developed) to see your name with these other companies, then sorry..........
but i think your pre sounds 'neve'ish, or if this sounds better to you 'tanner'ish.
(and from what i read of your past posts, you are a big part of the neve sound, so why the offense?)
ps. and if you look at the products listed, only two make neve clones, so that wasn't a neve clone list
but due to your request, i will never include aurora in any list i make again, considering my lists carry so much weight around gearslutz!!!!!!!!!"
Geoff dice:
"Hi
It has nothing to do with ego or hurt...
If you take the top cover off one of our products you will not find it based on Neve 1073 circuitry...unlike the BAE, Vintech, Chandler, etc.
Whether you include my products or not is up to you, as is my reasonable request not to call my products clones up to me."
(otro forero agrego:)

Hello Geoff,
I read this entire thread, because 1073 is such a phenomenon in the audio world... and it is fascinating that even today people get so emotional about, at times perverse, details of the construction, physics, and sound of these devices. Of the entire lineage actually.
It is amazing to have people such as yourself contribute to these threads, as your authority on the subject is so apparently obvious. The Aurora site gives plenty of information establishing your experience and inside knowledge of all things Neve.
Which is why I found your request to not have the Aurora products listed with the other clones so intriguing... After giving it some thought, I suspect that you object to the "clone" designation, as the topology of Aurora devices does not attempt to replicate any particular Neve model. That is understandable.
BUT,
If one were to point out to the INSIDE of the devices as the distinguishing factor, one could also point out the OUTSIDE as the common factor... no? All I want to say is this: if the point of the Aurora line is to NOT be likened to, or considered as clones of Neve devices, then I think maybe the interface re-design should be considered? I mean: here is the AMS Neve 1073, and a half of the GTQ2:
Both looking beautiful, and both looking remarkably similar. No wonder people think of them as reflections, replicas, or clones...
Given the "heated" nature of this thread, I just want to underscore, that my comment is exclusively about the visual appearance and the interface design of the devices. I, sadly, do not own the AMS, nor the GTQ2, and so can not comment on the sonics of the units. They may sound very different OR very similar: I simply do not know

But as a designer by training, I can say that the design decisions made certainly communicate in multiple and not uncertain ways, that the two devices are intended to be taken as similar (at the very least). I am wondering, and am sincerely curious about the rationale of such design decision? It would be fantastic to hear your thoughts on that.
Thank you in advance.
Respectfully,
p.
PS
The GTQ2 and BAE 1073 MPF are on a very short list of my upcoming acquisitions... so, hopefully, very soon, I will be able to formulate my own opinion on the sound of the Aurora piece... very exciting promise!

Hi
Without going into long boring details here are a few facts to give background on my choices.
Vintage Neve knobs were not made by Neve... they were bought from Marconi Instruments at St Albans who used them on their test gear. An interesting aside being that my elder brother worked in their moulding shop back in the early 1960's and I visited the shop on an open day... probably before the Neve company did because this was prior to the black faced modules.
Years pass and Marconi go over to collet knobs. Neve fans will despair that they threw away a trash skip full of the knob mouldings. Marconi also sold the dies for scrap.
Neve had meanwhile gone over to NAD knobs they moulded themselves.
It was I, a long time ago, did enormous detective work and located the company that Marconi had sold the dies to. They searched their stock of old dies and located the Marconi dies and were highly delighted when I informed them how valuable they were. They started moulding knobs for me before anyone else... the company could confirm this.
Marconi did not make a maroon 1/2" diameter knob... only grey and dark blue. T'was I, again, had the moulders make me maroon knobs for my GTM... so, I would like to think you might agree that, because I resurrected the knobs so that other companies could use them, I am equally entitled to use the design on my products.
Ironically, I have moved on and had the knobs custom moulded for me so, eventually, all the knobs we use will be produced uniquely for us.
As for the general appearance... I liked the original style, worked hard to locate the parts, so am "sincerest form of flattery" prolonging that style.
I worked there from October 1971 to December 1985 so have a strong connection with the era!
